Cognitive Orthoses: Toward Human-Centered AI

چکیده
WINTER 2015 5 As George Bernard Shaw once observed, being slandered is better than being ignored. So maybe AI researchers should be happy about what’s been happening lately. After decades of pundits and philosophers arguing that AI is provably impossible, suddenly that argument has been replaced with the assertion that not only is it possible, but superhuman AI is so inevitable that it is the greatest danger ever faced by the human race. In only about a decade, the conversation has shifted from you can’t do it ... to you shouldn’t do it! That shift has many parallels in other domains, from vaccination, to flight, to splitting the atom, to gene manipulation. The quest for flight, as we have observed elsewhere, affords a particularly striking parallel. Even in the years the indefatigable Wright brothers were hauling their planes from Ohio to Kitty Hawk to France, ever improving them and demonstrating the improvements, scientific wags — the president of the American National Academy of Sciences no less — were arguing that their quest was impossible. By the 1920s

Human-Centered Cognitive Orthoses: Artificial Intelligence for, Rather than Instead of, the People
WINTER 2015 9 Human-centered design aims to create technology that fits the capabilities and needs of people, including their practices and learning processes. A human-centered approach can be contrasted with a technology-centered design process in which how people interact with a system comes last, proceeding from automating functions to developing an interface, and then teaching people to use...
متن کاملStages of Cognitive Development in Uncertain-Logic-Based AI Systems
A novel theory of stages in cognitive development is presented, loosely corresponding to Piagetan theory but specifically oriented toward AI systems centered on uncertain inference components. Four stages are articulated (infantile, concrete, formal and reflexive), and are characterized both in terms of external cognitive achievements (a la Piaget) and in terms of internal inference control dyn...
متن کاملReports on the 2012 AAAI Fall Symposium Series
The development of user-centered technologies that assist older adults to live independently and also reduce the burden on caregivers is gaining more attention due to increasing healthcare costs and the aging population. AI is central to these technologies as it deals with the process of transforming raw sensor data into human-interpretable abstractions, innovating new human computer interfaces...
متن کاملCognitive Expert Systems and Machine Learning: Artificial Intelligence Research at the University of Connecticut
In order for next-generation expert systems to demonstrate the performance, robustness, flexibility, and learning ability of human experts, they will have to be based on cognitive models of expert human reasoning and learning We call such nextgeneration systems cognitive expert systems. Research at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the University of Connecticut is directed toward unders...
